Role Summary:

Subject Matter Expert who is on the forefront of Materials Engineering with the ability to identify, test and adapt new materials into extreme operating conditions (cryogenic, high temperature, erosive, corrosive), this includes metallics, ceramics and polymers. Works with Technology, Engineering and Product Management teams to understand specific industry and operational requirements to propose material solutions in severe service applications. Works with internal and 3rd party experts to analyze, test and qualify materials for use in Flowserve Valve Products. Identification and assessment of future industry trends taking into account technology innovation, industry and product development.

Responsibilities & Requirements:

  • ​​​​Subject Matter Expert who understands material failure mechanisms in severe service applications (temperature, pressure, fatigue, erosion, corrosion), and the mitigation of these failure mechanisms with correct selection of materials for optimal product performance.

  • Works with Technology, Engineering, Service and Product Management teams to identify and understand product failures and underperformance in a wide range of severe service applications.

  • Engages with End Users, Engineering, Product and Service Teams to promote and drive innovative solutions to material problems.

  • Performs product failure analysis and provides written customer reports and presentations on the results of this analysis.

  • Provides recommendations to management regarding which R&D projects should be executed by the company to maintain a competitive edge in the markets served and to enter potential new markets

  • Assists QC with resolution of supplier quality and performance issues

  • Works with Engineering, Sales and Service teams to identify and analyze product failures and performance issues and provides inputs to Reliability Engineering to drive root cause corrective action process.

  • Engages with appropriate global Product and Engineering Leaders to alert and advise them on product failures and deficiencies.

  • Participates in organizational Root cause and failure analysis when requested

  • Participates in technology, product and DtV design reviews when requested.

  • Credible company representative at international conferences, with ability to engage experts and present industry white papers. Advances Flowserve's technical standing in the marketplace.

  • Represents FCO's technical and commercial interests as a key contributor to new or revised regulations and standards developed by industrial and regulatory organizations, also assists Engineering and Product Management teams to understand and address the impact of new standards and regulations on Products.

  • Serves as a technical mentor and trainer to targeted staff

  • Recognized by peers within industry, academia and professional societies as an individual with exception technical knowledge.

  • Technical Sales Support.

  • Collaborates with Global Engineering Services to drive to unified approach to material solutions.

  • Provides support to Engineering, Operations and QC to ensure the correct materials and heat treatments are used in severe service applications (cryogenic, high temperatures over 850F, sour/ NACE service etc.)

  • Develops strategic partnerships with 3rd party testing laboratories and research facilities to drive advanced material testing and product failure analysis.

  • Works with Product Management and Sales Teams to recommend the correct materials for FCO Products, to ensure optimal product performance.

  • Collaborates with cross functional teams and external partners to identify new and innovative materials and manufacturing processes for the organization and evaluates Proof of Concept ideas for further development.

  • Responsible for Pre-Gate 0 Evaluation/ Concept Design activities (and documentation) in the Development Process.

  • Works with marketing to explore and evaluate technologies and ideas proposed to FCO by research facilities, organizations and venture capital firms, with the aim of advancing FCO’s competitive position in new and existing markets


  • Doctorate in Materials Engineering or related technical field with 10 years relevant industry experience,

  • Master of Materials Engineering or related technical field with 15 years relevant industry experience,

  • Bachelor of Materials Engineering or related technical field with 20 years relevant industry experience

  • Experience in one of the following industries: Refining, Power, Mining, Petrochemical.

  • Clear written and verbal communication style to act as the professional face of Flowserve to the customer.

  • Ability to produce professional reports and presentations in keeping with company policies and objectives

  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time

  • Works under high level supervision.

  • Proactive problem solver who identifies product performance issues and develops action plans and communication strategies to elevate the issue within the organization.

  • Identifies and quantifies the impact of defects and poor performance on FCO Products and End Users processes.

  • Uses expertise and knowledge to influence and motivate global teams to develop solutions to resolve product defect and customer performance issues.

  • Solves complex problems and develops solutions based on technical expertise and comprehensive evaluation of issues

  • Applies in-depth knowledge of specialized area and understands how their role complements and contributes to other functions in achieving organizational objectives.

  • Affiliations with the following Organizations and Conferences: NACE, AWS, ASTM, ASME, PED, DIN

  • Combined experience and post-graduate degree, top career level
